Will suffering from Crohn's disease affect my life insurance?
There are an estimated 115,000 people in the UK who have been diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease which is considered one of the two main conditions under the banner of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (the other being Ulcerative Colitis). The condition is typically diagnosed in people between the ages of 10 to 40, but can be diagnosed in reality at any age.
Here at trustsured, we have dealt with numerous customers who have come to us to help find an appropriate life insurance or critical illness cover policy. They often tell us they have experienced difficulties in the past finding a policy at a suitable price or have been put off from approaching insurance provider after insurance provider as the whole process is time consuming and repetitive.
This experience has helped us build up a detailed working knowledge of the condition of Crohn’s Disease in the context of life insurance and critical illness cover applications. This allows us the confidence to be able to guide our customers through the insurance market and explain in detail the options available to each individual depending on their personal circumstances.
What information will I need to disclose if I suffer from Crohn's disease and want to apply for life insurance or critical illness cover?
If you are one of the thousands of Crohn’s Disease suffers in the UK and are in need of a life insurance style product there are some things you should consider before agreeing to a policy. Firstly, it is important to remember that not all insurers are the same. By this we mean, not all insurers will offer the same terms of insurance or indeed may be unable to offer any insurance at all. With this in mind, it makes the most sense to approach a broker with not only access to a panel of insurers, but also a broker such as trustsured, who has a detailed understanding of how each of those insurers will treat an application from a customer disclosing Crohn’s Disease and it’s specific details. The consequences could otherwise be a higher premium being offered than is necessary as there could be cheaper options elsewhere, or in more extreme cases, an application being declined. In the latter example, we have had customers approach us in the past with the view that they are un-insurable because of past experiences, when it turns out they had simply approached the wrong insurers.
What sort of questions will I be asked if I want to apply for life insurance or critical illness cover and I suffer with Crohn's disease?
As with all medical disclosures, as part of a life insurance or critical illness cover application, the insurer will ask you for details surrounding your condition as part of the health and lifestyle questionnaire. This is the interactive online questionnaire we complete with all our customers as part of the application process in to gaining insurance.
The insurer will want to get a full perspective on the severity of the condition as well as how long an applicant has suffered from Crohn’s Disease, and the different types of treatments they have been prescribed in the past or at present. It is important that this information is as accurate as possible, so it’s always worth double-checking dates and prescriptions to make sure they are correct.
Typically, an insurer will ask questions about the degree in which Crohn’s Disease affects you and different parts of your body. For example they will ask if the condition is restricted to the colon and ileum only, or if it also affects areas such as the stomach, oesophagus and mouth or if there is any duodenum involvement. In more severe cases there may be symptoms which affect the eyes or skin as well as joint inflammation or bone loss. They will also ask about the types of treatments which have been used including oral or intravenous steroids or if the applicant has required surgery, and if so, on how many occasions.
All of these details will need to be fully disclosed as part of any application which is why we take the time to initially discuss all the details surrounding an individual’s condition specific to them. We don’t believe in trying to apply a one size fits all approach as this will inevitably lead to a poor outcome for the customer as discussed above, with higher premiums or being turned down by an insurer. In some cases, it may be unavoidable to find an insurance product that does not have an increase in the price once the disclosure for Crohn’s Disease has been taken into consideration. Known as a “rating” or “loading” to the standard premium, this is what insurers will sometimes do if they feel an application poses them a greater risk that an application from a person who does not suffer from Crohn’s Disease.
When a condition is more severe, there is sometimes the need for the insurer to contact an applicants GP and ask for more information about the patients Crohn’s Disease before they make a decision. If this is the case, your dedicated case manager will talk you through exactly how this works and follow through with regular updates on the progress of gaining the report.
